🌟 Remedial Tuition at Bright Young Minds

Helping Every Child Reach Their Full Potential

At Bright Young Minds, we specialise in remedial tuition — a structured, in-depth approach to helping children overcome learning difficulties and close academic gaps. We don’t just offer extra lessons at the child’s current grade level. Instead, we work backwards to address the root causes of learning delays, rebuild foundational skills, and guide students toward long-term success.

🧠 What Is Remedial Tuition — And How Is It Different from Extra Lessons?

While extra lessons often focus on helping a child keep up with their current schoolwork, remedial tuition is a targeted intervention that focuses on what the child has not yet mastered from previous grades. It is more diagnostic, more personalised, and more effective in addressing long-standing academic struggles.

Remedial tuition involves:

  • A detailed initial academic/diagnostic assessment

  • A custom-designed learning plan built around the child’s actual skill level

  • Carefully scaffolded lessons designed to rebuild missing concepts

  • Ongoing adjustments and reassessments to ensure progress

This process may take time — but it works. With the right support, every child can improve.

📚 Our Remedial Programs

At Bright Young Minds, we offer subject-specific remediation in both English and Afrikaans, as well as Mathematics and Physics. Our programs are designed to target exactly where the gaps are, with small-group lessons that are dynamic, interactive, and highly structured.

📖 English Reading Program

For learners who are still learning to decode words, read fluently, or understand what they’re reading. This program uses phonics, sight words, comprehension drills, and vocabulary development to build strong reading foundations.

🗣️ English Language Program

Ideal for learners who can read fluently but struggle with comprehension, writing, grammar, or vocabulary. We focus on improving reading for meaning, grammar rules, spelling, creative writing, and exam techniques.

🇿🇦 Afrikaans for Beginners Program

Perfect for children new to Afrikaans or who have fallen far behind. We work on sounds (vowels/consonants), pronunciation, basic vocabulary, sentence construction, and grammar in a highly supportive way.

📝 Afrikaans Language Program

For learners who need to strengthen grammar, spelling rules, comprehension, creative writing, and vocabulary to prepare for tests and exams at their current school level.

➕ Primary School Mathematics (Grades 1–7)

Our Math program revisits foundational topics such as place value, multiplication, word problems, time, and fractions. We use written and interactive activities to help children develop number sense, problem-solving skills, and confidence.

🔢 High School Pure Mathematics (Grades 8–12)

For learners on the CAPS or IEB curriculum needing extra support in topics such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, functions, and exam preparation. Each session is tailored to the learner’s current understanding and long-term goals.

📐 Mathematics Literacy (Grades 10–12)

A focused, supportive environment where students can master key concepts, build their numeracy skills, and gain confidence in interpreting real-world data and scenarios.

⚛️ Physics (Grades 10–12 only)

We support learners through complex topics including mechanics, waves, electricity, and scientific reasoning. Our program reinforces concepts taught at school and includes additional explanation and practice to ensure full understanding.

🧩 How Remediation Works

Each child begins with a comprehensive assessment to determine their true academic level. This allows us to identify gaps that may be years behind their current grade. From there, we build a personalised learning path that:

  • Revisits and rebuilds previous content

  • Progresses step-by-step to higher-level work

  • Uses a mix of written tasks, computer activities, and educational games

  • Includes weekly exit cards (filled in by both the tutor and the learner)

  • Provides weekly feedback to parents to track progress

After 7 months, a follow-up reassessment is conducted to measure improvement and adjust the learning plan accordingly.

🧒 Why Small Group Tutoring Works Best

We use small group sessions (2–6 learners per group) because research — and experience — show that it’s more effective than one-on-one tutoring. In a group setting:

  • Learners benefit from peer interaction and shared problem-solving

  • Tutors can use games and group-based activities to keep lessons fun and engaging

  • Children feel less pressured, which increases confidence and motivation

One-on-one sessions can sometimes be too intense or isolating for children — especially those already struggling. Our small group model strikes the perfect balance between

individual attention and social learning.

⏱️ How Long Does It Take?

Remediation is not a quick fix. On average, a child who is 18 months behind academically will need at least 48 lessons (approximately7–12 months of weekly 80-minute sessions) to catch up. But the results are long-lasting — and life-changing. With consistency and the right support, every child can learn and grow in confidence.

💬 Ready to Get Started?

We invite all new students to attend a free assessment so we can guide you toward the best program for your child. From there, your child will be placed in a small group at their level with a dedicated tutor and begin the journey to academic success.
